NoCascoe Scholarship Committee and Membership,

I want to introduce myself.  I am Samantha Ann Slade currently a Senior at Apex High School in Apex,
NC.  My mother is Melissa Weatherly, Program Technician in the Wake County office, and I am so
blessed to have had the opportunities I have had in my life.

Just to give you a little information about myself, I am an Honor Roll student and have been throughout
high School.  I am a member of the Academy of Information and Technology, which is a program that
allows its member's to become more computer literate than the normal student. We are required to take
computer applications, computer programing, web design, Ecommerce, and HTML for a total of five extra
classes required for graduation as well as a Senior Project which is a paid internship.  We had to job
hunt and seek our own employment including writing resumes and cover letters as well as interviews.
This  internship is required during the summer of Junior/Senior year and finalized with an internship
presentation to professionals at the LORD Corporation.  I'm a member of the Technical Honor Society,
Key Club, Spanish Club, and a "Government Club".

I’ve had the opportunity to volunteer at several places over the past four years.  Most of my volunteering
was at the local library helping to shelve books and creating activities for the younger children in the
community to participate and learn from on the weekends.  I have volunteered with Apex Parks and Rec.
Department, and with a younger nonprofit girls fastpitch softball team.  Two days a week I would work
with the softball team  teaching the proper hitting, fielding, and throwing mechanics, along with how to
maintain a healthy lifestyle.   This was the most rewarding of my volunteer work as I got to witness how
much the girls have grown and they attend some of my games also.  I loved being a roll model for them.

I also work/worked at Schlotsky's Deli which has taught me an enormous amount of responsibility.  Time
management is an enormous tool.  I think to be successful you must possess it.

Last but not least is one of the most rewarding things in my life which has been having the opportunity to
play softball.  I've had the opportunity to be the starting Short Stop for the Apex High School Varsity team
all four of my High School years.  I have been blessed to have had the opportunity to play ball at a very
competitive level and everywhere across the country, with and against the best players in the country.
We have played in places as far away as California, Texas, Florida, New York , New Jersey, and that list
goes on.  I will study Nursing and play for the University of North Carolina - Charlotte 49er's in the fall of
2011.

I am extremely thankful to have been chosen as one of the recipients of the NoCASCO Scholarship.  I
have worked very hard in school, athletics, my community, and my job and hope that reflected in my
application.  It is my hope that you will be proud to learn of my efforts in the future and understand how
important your monetary help is/was in funding my efforts.  Thank you so much for your generosity and
acknowledgment of my effort thus far.

I plan on majoring in Nursing at UNC-Charlotte, and I hope to later attend Duke University. (DON'T TELL
KEITH)  It’s not always easy to juggle athletics and school, and I am truly grateful for the assistance that I
am receiving because of you.  Thank you again for your support of me and my education.

Sincerely,

Samantha Ann Slade
